Jim Rooney is a highly accomplished individual with a diverse background in the world of baseball. His journey began in 1981 when he was selected as the 1st overall pick in the January draft by the Chicago Cubs and the 7th overall pick in the June draft by the Baltimore Orioles. From 1981 to 1985, he honed his skills as a pitcher in the Baltimore Orioles organization.
After his playing career, Rooney transitioned into coaching and training roles. From 1986 to 1987, he served as a pitching and strength coach at Pace University. In 1988, he became the Assistant Director of Training at Plus One Fitness Clinics, which was the first personal training studio in the USA. During this time, he played a pivotal role in shaping the fitness industry.
Rooney's passion for coaching continued as he served as a pitching and strength coach at Rockland Community College from 1989 to 1992. Under his guidance, the team reached the Junior College World Series in 1992. In 1997 and 1998, Rooney took on the role of Manager and Director of Player Development for Fortituto Baseball in Bologna, Italy.
In 1999, Rooney joined the Somerset Patriots as the Director of Player Personnel and Pitching Coach. He then went on to become the pitching coach for Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League, where he helped the team become league champions from 2000 to 2002. From 2001 to 2003, Rooney worked as a special assignment scout and pitching coach for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Rooney's coaching career took him to the Dominican Winter League in 2003, where he served as a pitching coach for the Escogido Baseball Club. In 2004, he joined the Milwaukee Brewers as the Minor League Pitching Coordinator and National Scouting Supervisor. Over the course of his tenure, Rooney oversaw the development and evaluation of over 75 MLB pitchers.
In 2019, Rooney established Jim Rooney LLC, where he serves as a development specialist, motivational speaker, writer, and strength and conditioning trainer. He also founded Rooney Baseball, offering individual and group instruction to improve overall performance through comprehensive analysis and expert instruction in all areas of baseball. By utilizing both traditional training methods and advanced technology, Rooney provides personalized exercise prescriptions to his clients.
Rooney's educational background includes studies at Cornell University from 1979 to 1980, Pace University from 1986 to 1987, and Southern New Hampshire University from 2019 to 2020.
