While I was the pitching coordinator for the Brewers, a long time well respected major and minor league coach/manager asked me, "Why do you have our A-Ball pitchers doing this workout? Roger Clemens does not do that." He was referring to 42 year old Clemens during his Houston Astros days. This is a common question and a major misconception in youth development. Many programs and workouts that are marketed today have a young player emulating what a MLB player has done. I am positive that the 22 yr old Clemens did not do what the 42 year old Clemens did. Youth instruction should be about what is best for the player at that age and that stage of their personal development. Trying to have a young player workout in the same way as a very advanced professional athlete is simply a recipe for disaster.
